Kindle 2: Amazon’s New Wireless Reading Device (Latest Generation)
I have been using the Sony eReader for about two years, and decided to make the switch with the Kindle2.
First, a few points of comparison. The Sony is smaller and thinner and, I think, has longer battery life. It’s not clear how big an advantage it is to have the extra battery life, though, because both get you through a long day with power to spare. The Kindle obviously has a lot of additional features that are a plus–more books to choose from, wireless delivery, etc. To my surprise, the white plastic case looks pretty good, certainly better than in the pictures. The Kindle has a good feel in the hand.
So much for the comparison. Now to the Kindle itself. It’s great! Basically, I feel like this is the future, and Amazon has gotten much of it right and will probably just continue to improve it.
For me, it’s a big plus to be able to underline and make notes. Now I can read serious stuff, not just novels.
It’s also a big plus that there is a larger selection of books. I just hope that the price goes down. Producing another copy of an electronic book doesn’t involve more printing presses, and when pricing reflects this, I think the medium will become even more popular.
My experience with footnotes indicates that they have a ways to go. I have to put a bookmark in the notes section and then bounce back and forth. It would be much better if clicking on a link in the note took you back to your original position in the book.
I sent in some PDF articles to have sent to my Kindle. It worked the first couple of times, but for some reason is not working now.
I’m still working on figuring out the integration with Windows. Ultimately, it would be nice to have seamless integration. This will be my primary reading device, and it would be nice to be able to move PDFs back and forth without going through Amazon.
Overall, this is a definite winner and I’m delighted with the product.
